I considered first just making a comment about the essay, but the piece is so well written that I decided to lift it straight from the readers' page of the Big Rapids Pioneer. That it needs to be said, in a region of Michigan where the erosion of civility and intellect is at times stunning, emphasizes the concurrent erosion of who we are as a nation -- and what it means to exist as a supportive society.
